A small piece of land - 1

Title: A small piece of land - 1 Size: 2.05 MB Dimension:2048 X 2732 Time: September, 2017 Done on my iPad Pro In school, I was immensely impressed by the poems of William Wordsworth, especially Daffodils . Then in the art school at Baroda, our teacher,  Nasreen Mohamedi , asked us to draw a small piece of land i.e. 1 square foot. It was the most challenging drawing assignment I ever faced. It was then that I realized how beautiful and bountiful that small, seemingly insignificant, piece of earth was. Maybe it is all coming back. Then this probably is my tribute to Nasreen (an artist, a teacher and a friend, I immensely admired). Incidently, Daffodils was also titled as I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud . A state I am in.

Remembering Molina

My beloved wife, Molina, passed away on 11th May, 2017. She was my world, my universe. With her passing away I seem to have lost everything. She was suffering from brain cancer (Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade IV) since last 4 years (June, 2013). It was difficult time. She fought the disease with great bravery. In spite of going through 2 surgeries, her smile remained intact. I loved, respected and admired her for many qualities but all these grew phenomenally during this testing time. She was a bundle of energy. A restless person. When her batteries were charged she couldn't sit still and when drained she slumped in bed. A photographer by profession, she was also a trained dancer (Visharad in Bharatnatyam) and a self-taught visual artist. Molina had child-like fascination for animals. This fascination remained her central subject both in photography and painting. She had spent a lot of her childhood visiting wild life sanctuaries, as her father, Mr. Hemendra Shah...

Convocation Address at Pearl Academy, Jaipur, India

18th November, 2016 I feel extremely priviledged to be amongst you today for this very special event in Pearl Academy. My association with Pearl is about 10 years old now. I was in design education for 24 years before I joined Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum in the City Palace. My address today will be to the students, especially the graduating students. I. Hands on, minds on I would urge you to not just think but also use your hands in doing things. Doing is a very important part of thinking process. If you have an idea, don’t just live with it. My experience tells me that ideas are random in nature. They need articulation. You have to articulate them. To do so you have to do. Thinking and then doing leads to further thinking and then further doing and so on……An idea is like a spark. It comes and goes. Persuing an idea is like nurturing it. Einstein once said that there are no big or small ideas. The idea becomes big or small depending on how much it is pursued. ...

Hi! There!

I am starting this art blog today. Here I will share my thoughts, ideas, work and also inspiration. Inspiration could be images from anywhere as well as thoughts, ideas and works of other collectives or individuals. I have been involved with design academics for 25 years. Hence design and design academics will also find some space here. My own work may also tend to flow in both the arenas. I hope to get comments, which may be observations, suggestions, recommendations or criticism. I hope it becomes constructive, stimulating and insightful. Cheers, Yunus In gratitude: I am in gratitude to my dear friend Sanjeev Bothra for giving me the idea to start this blog. He said that I must, as I have so much to share. I hope he is right. I am also indebted to my dear friend, Rahul Sharma, for putting together (or whatever it is termed as) this blog. Or else, how would a technological novice like me every be able to do so. Below is my drawing > Python > A4 size > mix...
